Therapy Services for Teens, Young Women & Families
Personalized therapy for teens, young women, and families in Leawood, KS and the greater Kansas City area, with individual and couples support for adults.
You don't need a crisis to start. Feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected is reason enough. Therapy can help.
Teen Therapy (Tweens & Teens)
Growing up today means juggling social media, academic pressure, friendships, anxiety, and emerging independence, often all at once. Therapy can give teens a warm, supportive space where they feel seen and safe talking about whatever is on their minds, from who to ask to homecoming to what to study in college, while also addressing mental health concerns.
Dr. Davis takes teen confidentiality seriously, because trust is what makes therapy work. Private conversations stay private unless there's a safety concern or your teen gives permission. At the same time, parents are an important part of the process. Dr. Davis may share general themes and suggest ways to support your child to help you strengthen your relationship without compromising your teen's trust.
Parents, you don't have to understand everything your teen is going through. They just need to know you're trying.
“For many years I have referred children and adolescents needing psychotherapy exclusively to Dr. Davis. I often work with parents and learn they are quite pleased with the referral. I would choose her for any family member or friend needing counseling.”
- Leanne Ware, PhD Licensed Clinical Psychologist
Therapy for Young Women
Does everything feel so important right now? School, friendships, family expectations, and the sense that everyone else has it figured out can pile up fast. You've gotten good at smiling through it, and you may not have a name for what you're feeling, only that it's heavier than it should be.
In therapy, you can work toward understanding yourself more deeply, breaking patterns that aren't serving you, and finding healthier ways to handle emotions, relationships, and everyday pressure, including anxiety and perfectionism.
You don't have to choose between being true to yourself and staying connected to the people around you.
Parent Coaching & Family Therapy
You've noticed the shift. Your child is quieter, or quicker to snap. The bedroom door stays closed, and conversations that used to come easily now end in tears or silence. You can't tell whether to push or give space.
In parent coaching, we'll work on understanding your child's emotional and developmental world, communicating more effectively, holding boundaries while still leading with empathy, and responding to challenging behaviors.
Family therapy brings everyone into the room. When the same argument keeps coming back, it's usually the pattern that needs attention, not the people. We'll work on listening, communicating more clearly, and rebuilding connection, because being right isn't the same as being connected.
"As the mother of three young adult daughters, I know firsthand that no stage of growing up is easy, for kids or for the parents who love them."
-Dr. Melanie Davis
“Melanie helped me understand my son’s perspective and needs during his recovery. She is a great listener and offered wisdom and strategies that equipped me to navigate my own fears and be fully present for my son at a critical time. I’m so thankful for her counsel.”
- Mother, The Crossroads Program
Adults & Couples Therapy
Individual Therapy for Adults
Maybe you're anxious, overextended, or stuck in patterns you can see but can't seem to change. You might be a high achiever who's tired of being so hard on yourself, or in a challenging season of life. In individual therapy, we'll look at what's driving the stress and build practical strategies for daily life. If your faith matters to you, it’s welcome here.
Couples Counseling
It's rarely one big event. More often it's the same argument on repeat, or feeling more like roommates than partners. Being right isn't the same as being connected, so in couples counseling we focus on the pattern between you, not on who's to blame. We'll work on listening, communicating, and rebuilding closeness and trust.
You can care deeply without carrying everything.
How Therapy Works
First Visit
The first appointment usually runs 75 to 90 minutes.
It includes a clinical interview, initial impressions, and an overview of what treatment would involve.
When a child or teen is the client, Dr. Davis may meet with the parents first, without the child.
The goal for this initial appointment is for you to leave feeling seen, with information or approaches you can use that day.
Ongoing Sessions
Sessions last 50 to 55 minutes.
Children and teens typically have individual sessions, with parent-only sessions scheduled periodically.
Most clients meet weekly or every other week at the start. Front-loading visits builds progress and momentum, and when early appointments are spread far apart, too much "life happens."
Treatment length varies. Most clients see Dr. Davis for an average of 8 to 12 sessions, then taper to monthly, quarterly, or even annual check-ins, as determined together.
Sessions are available in person in Leawood, KS or by secure video when appropriate.
Between Sessions
Dr. Davis will provide practical resources and strategies to help you take what is explored in therapy into everyday life.
Therapy offers insight and new tools, and practicing them between sessions helps turn that insight into progress.
Most questions between sessions can be handled through our secure, HIPAA-compliant online client portal.
Phone check-ins are available too.
If you or someone you love is in crisis, call or text 988 (the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911.

Financial Policies & Health Insurance
Health Insurance
Dr. Davis is considered an out-of-network provider and does not submit insurance claims. However, you can contact your insurance company for information regarding your benefits. See Determining Coverage for questions to ask to determine your benefits.
No Surprises Act & Good Faith Estimate
The No Surprises Act that went into effect January 1, 2022, requires all healthcare providers to notify clients of their federal rights and protections against “surprise billing.” This act requires notice of your federally protected rights to receive a notification when services are rendered by an out-of-network provider, if a client is uninsured or elects not to use their insurance. It also requires healthcare providers to provide clients with a Good Faith Estimate of the cost of services.
Good Faith Estimate
The Good Faith Estimate outlines CPT codes and fees for each service. The number of sessions each client needs varies so the total cost of treatment is difficult to determine at the onset of therapy. Dr. Davis will provide you with regular feedback and collaborate with you throughout treatment to decide the best approach for your specific needs. Dr. Davis encourages decreasing frequency of sessions as progress is made.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Who do you work with?
I began my career working with younger children, and parents soon asked to work with me individually on issues affecting their families. I especially love working with tweens, teens, and young adults in the "everything seems so important" seasons. I also see parents, adults, couples, and families.
What's the difference between a clinical psychologist and a therapist or counselor?
Clinical psychologists have extensive training in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, so I can look beyond the immediate concern to what's underneath. Counselors and therapists play an important role too. The difference is the breadth and depth of training.
Is faith part of therapy?
I believe good therapy can honor both science and faith. I use evidence-based approaches with every client, and for those who want it, I also offer counseling that incorporates Christian faith, Scripture, and prayer. If you'd rather keep faith out of it, that's completely fine.
What about medication?
I specialize in psychological assessment and evidence-based psychotherapy, so I don't prescribe medication. When medication may help, I can coordinate with your primary care provider or refer you to a trusted psychiatrist, so you get the right combination of psychological and medical care.
Do you offer online therapy?
Yes! It's wild, but I have some clients I've never met in person. I'm a PSYPACT provider, which allows me to offer telehealth in 44 U.S. states and jurisdictions. That's especially valuable when clients move or go to college, because they can keep ongoing treatment or an occasional check-in.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
You can view my schedule and book or cancel appointments through the secure, online client portal. No Shows and Cancellations without 24-hours’ notice may be subject to a $70 late cancellation or missed appointment fee.
